you can have land areas and still maintain a fair amount of water volume, if you don't stack the land up from the tank bottom, but instead use a shelf to create it. I am in the process of doing just this, to allow for 9 gallons of water in a 15 gallon tank, with 5-6" of air space.... and the shelf will be completely removable once planted... and the attachments hidden from view... I'll post pictures as progress continues, but have nothing special to show right now.
