tankmates for a dempsey

this may sound pretty stupid but bear with me what about a small school of blackskirt tetras . they get 3 inches

would they still be a target

i might just do the dempsey and a catfish in the tank

im considering building a 6 to 8 foot tank with the help of my cousin (a 3rd generation carpenter whos been doing construction since he was liek 3)

No the tetras will get eaten eventually, although they may survive awhile. For dithers giant danios and tin foil barbs (too big for a 55g) are the best bet.

thats why im doing my research here and not in the tank

i think ima wait on the jd till i build my 6 - 8 foot tank

The jd will be fine in yoru 55g for along time. Just dont get any of those fish that grow super fast and you will be ok! 6-8' tank sounds very cool!

i think im goning to do 6' x 2' x 2' it disapoints me but i was measuring and i dont have the wall space for my 8' x 3' x 3' i was planning. but the decreased depth will give me better visability front to back.

jadefoodog,

Have you priced materials ? You may find it's the same price, and a lot safer to buy a tank. IMO it isn't worth building a tank until you exceed the "standard" sizes.

i curently have a 55 with 2 pink cons, 1 blk con and a jack and they all get along fine. the jack likes to chase the cons sometimes but i think he does it to show whos boss

well i get materials at cost cause nearly all of my family cepot me does construction for a living having 2 master carpenter cousins will be a big asset in not jacking the tank up.

now heres the fun part

to get tany tank larger than a 55 i have to drive 100 miles and then im still not garenteed anything larger than a 90. and the place that sells those quoted me 460 bucks for a 70g (an they can do this since theres nowhere else that sells them that big around here)

also if i buy a tank i have to buy it all at once. i can section my tank build off in stages. several small payments works alot better than a huge one.

also building a couple small tanks (IE: a couple 6 footers and a 8 footer or 2) will give me exsperince if i want to build a huge tank ever. also if i ever get good at them they would make perfect "in wall tanks" and hell a in wall around heres liek 1500 for a 100g. but for me its more the exsperince of making one and being able to say "yeah i made that huge tank over there and its worked for 5 years without repairs."

oh allso its going to be all wood except for the front glass so that cuts down the price alot
