So in my 180 gallon I have a school of 7 Australian Rainbowfish, a peacock eel, and a school of 8 Angelfish (4 koi, 2 black lace, 1 gold, 1 wild [yes actually wild caught]). I was wondering what could live with them? Yes, the angels all get along, and yes they are already mature (breeding pairs have formed). I find that when they're kept in bigger groups they don't fight. I'm thinking about adding some more rainbows (other species). Any other possible tankmates? Fish like swordtails and cherry barbs go down the filter (the grates are too big on the wet dry). Does this sound good?

8 Angelfish********
1 Peacock Eel*
7 Australian Rainbowfish*******
5 Boeseman's Rainbowfish
5 Red Irian Rainbowfish
15 Assorted large tetra

Instead of all the rainbows (besides the group already in there of course) could I add a group of 8 discus? I used to keep discus and angels together with a stingray in the 180 gallon and had no problems, but I ended up selling the discus and the ray choked on a piece of krill (it was an 8 month old P. reticulata). If any Angel on Discus problems arise I can always move the school of discus to an empty 90 gallon. If the rainbows scare the discus I'll move them to a 55 gallon paludarium. So this would be the stocking list:

8 Angelfish
8 Discus
7 Australian Rainbowfish
1 Peacock Eel
15-20 Assorted larger tetras (probably diamond and/or bleeding heart and/or columbian)

IMO it's kinda pushing it with the number of fish. Is your tank planted? Also, the Angel and Discus mix is a 50/50, it's a good thing that you have the availible 90 gallon and 55 gallon.

Edit:
Forgot to mention, what's the temperature in the tank? Your rainbows (I'm assuming australian rainbow means melanotaenia fluviatilis) preffered water temperature will clash with the preffered temperature of discus.

Tank temp is 84. The rainbows (not sure what species that's what they were labeled as) were bred in 86 degree water at my local discus store. In fact they used to be kept in a tank with a bunch of F1 Tefe Greens. Tank is not planted, because my angels have some odd affinity for eating the plants (everything including anubias, crypts, java fern, swordplants, vallis, etc. They even ate the cyano that was growing in their old tank!). It is heavily planted with plastic plants though. My ammonia and nitrite are always zero and nitrate is always less than 10 ppm because of a forty gallon wet-dry hooked up to the tank (thus no small fish due to the overflow). pH is 6.5 because of the big chunk of driftwood in the tank (the angels have laid eggs on it before).

I'm not familiar with Discus, but I do have diamond tetras w/ my Angel and have no issues. Even one of the fry survived when the diamonds surprised me with babies in that tank. I know at least 2 hatched and grew a little. One disappeared (I'm assuming Angel food), but the other is now as big as the rest of the adults. No spawns since then, so maybe that was just a fluke, but they seem to be fine in the same tank with the Angel.

I have diamond tetras, Angels, Discus, sterbai cories and harlequin rasboras in same tank. No issues really. I keep my tank at 82...above that the diamonds really struggle...just a thought.

Ok, I'll lower the tank 2 degrees. No big deal. Thanks for the tip! :)

HAHA. I have a 125 with just two angels now, but the Diamonds breed like monthly. Its got a bunch of moss which helps keep the baby diamonds safe. I went two months with out a water change and then did 40%. I think it also spawned my cories.. (only found on though) add an airstone, moss and big water change for tetras to spawn.

Check my video of the tank here...http://www.youtube.com/user/Dustinsfishtanks#p/u/59/MfCd8b_iA54

got a blog at www.fishtanktv.com I should do a new video of the different sized diamond tetras..

The tank does have a ton of java moss in it, as well as an air stone. I typically change about 50% of the water at a time, but no spawns since that first one - or if they have, the babies haven't survived and I've never seen them, which could be as well. It's stocked well enough though. Any more and I'll probably move some to the 75 gal. They'd probably school OK with the red-eye tetras.
