Hi, I want to start keeping Oscars in addition to my other tanks. (I sense an addiction coming on LOL) I'm also very interested in the blue Jack Dempseys. Could I keep 2 Oscars and 2 Jack Dempseys in a 75-gal, or is this too many? Thanks!!

a single oscar will ultimately need a minimum of 75 gallons just for itself ... and that's with great filtration. another oscar and some jack dempseys is too much fish for that tank.

you could keep a pair of os in that tank by themselves, just remember to keep up lots of wcs. 2 jds and 2 os would need at least 180g imo. if you ever get jds remember that the electric blues(if thats what you mean by blue) are much more sensitive and harder to keep then regulars, not to mention much more expensive. you might be able to do an o and a jd only im not sure tho. remember if you get two os make sure you get a male and female. you could also do an o, some silver dollars and possibly a severum.

Oscar genders

Is it possible to sex the small juvenile Oscars usually sold at the LFS? If I was to get a M and F, how would I know for sure? And assuming they came from the same source, is brother and sister okay (if it came to spawning, eventually).

Silly questions, I know. Sorry but new to Oscars. :(

Oscars are very difficult to sex, which is usually done by inspecting the vents, and even then, experienced oscar keepers don't know the sexes of their O's.

It doesn't really matter what sex they are because oscars are large passive fish that only become aggressive towards each other when space is cramped or they're not being fed enough.

the best way to do it is to get 6 and let em pair off if your looking for them to breed, and if you dont it may not work if they arent male and female, and even if they are it might not work. your chances are pretty good if you raise them together from when theyr young, but cichlids have so much personality it could end up not working.

Oscars need huge tanks. For a single oscar with no other tank mates you are looking at a minimum of at least 100 gallons.
