whats anyones opinion about using an old top half tanning bed, as lights for marine setup?..think it would work?, or just be really bright?...

Were you thinking of replaceing the bulbs? If not, then no, I would definitely not use them. Tanning beds give off lots of UV (which makes you tan). Too much UV can bleach or kill corals and damage fish. That's why you always have to use a UV filter on double-ended metal halide fixtures (the glass shield serves that purpose). For single-ended MH lamps, the outer shell serves the same purpose.
ok, well then i guess i won't be doing that, lol, do you think its possible to just change the bulbs to a better siuted bulb?..I am thinking at that rate, i might as well just buy the hood, lmao..
when it comes to SW and Reefs there pretty much no way to get around buying specific lights it would be awesome if you could use halide light they sell at wall mart or homedepot cut on cost and would be an easy DIY set up.

You can use the halide fixtures they sell at homedepot and the like, just change the bulbs...
If it has an HO flo. ballast you should be able to change the bulbs to a better spectrum.I know you can buy 72" 10k bulbs for it if that is how long they are.How many bulbs does it have and what is the wattage on the bulbs now?If you can just change the bulbs I would say it would be a great DIY lighting system,Hell,even if you have to change the ballast it will save you a ton of $.How big is the tank?
I am looking at a 125 gal by christmas, lol...It has stand, glass top, and I will need to either build the canopy, or hide the top( leaning torward this option,ie; mock wall)
I don't know about the wattage on the tanning bed, its an old one with just the top half lights, ..I will be combing a 72 gal, reef tank, with a 55 gal FOWLR, I can't wait, just do not want to sink tons of extra cash into the lighting...
