Tannins in water or something else?

Oh well..Learn to love tannins, Bk.;) I just don't get why yellow water due to tannic acids would be unsightly to most people.:grinyes:

well people love clear water since it transmits light much better, makes the tank lighter (ppl with clear water actually see their planted background picture:mad2:) lol I had my wood for about hmm month and half more or less now and i have to change water every 3-4 days or else the water becomes not just yellow but orange/brown, i mean looks great and all "natural" but crystal clear water wouldnt be so bad either.. Before i was doing 25% w/c every 3-4 days and it would clear up slightly but yesterday tried doing a 50% and now its clear not orange buttttt im going through a mini cycle and im sure by the time the cycle is done i will 100% sure will have orange water.. but i love the look of the wood 2 much to get rid of it, and my clown pleco would fight me for it since thats his spot to chill..

and yes i boiled my wood let it sit for a whole week i water and its still leaching dark side into my tank.

wood, depending on its size, can leach for MANY years. it appears that yours, after being submerged for over 10 years, is one of those pieces. Like it was said above, some aquarists (including myself) appreciate the natural look of a light tinting from tannic acid.

if you really want to rid your tank of the tinted water, you may have to remove and re-treat the wood (you can get treatment instructions in the article linked below in my sig) before putting it back in. OR, you can look into a different piece/set of driftwood that you can prepare differently. the choice is really yours, but when it comes down to it, your fish are not in danger either way. :)

bk828- Thank you for the tip ill try and find it, do you know if it works well?

On various plant-oriented fora I read, the posters swear by Purigen for removing tannins. It can also be recharged, which saves you money over carbon over the long term.

(And I don't even have my tank set up yet!)

I've decided to use purigen in my filters, when I finally get things going.
