tap purifier : is it really nesesry????????

ok so heres what happend,
i filled up a bucket of water bucouse i had just bought new substrate for the 60. i put the angel and the BGK in the bucket of water. cleaned all the tank out, then replaced the sand, wood and stones, filled up the tank and poured the fish in. DID NOT use tap water purifier once. its been 6 days and fish are fine, poking around there new teretry. ALSO, i NEVER use it when i do water changes so, do you think the companies are having a lend of us?

Kind of a crapshoot since you live in Australia

Get a chlorine test kit if you want to know for sure.

I know my water has chloramines. It shows up on my tests.

do you think the water supply may be different? i know australian water has fluride in in, but not so sure about ammonia.

depends on who provides your water and what additives they put in, but water conditioners make the water safe as possible for your sensitive fish, some contain good stuff for your fish

Your best bet is to contact your water company and ask them. The water is most likely not the same and your government will have different regulations controlling just how much of what is safe for you guys to consume.

In the US most of the cities water systems add chloramine to the water for purification. It probably is not required by your local area.

a one time dose of chlorinated water will probably not hurt your fish, constant exposure will. it would be the equivalent to you or I being exposed to some very harsh gas fumes or epoxy fumes for a short period of time, not pleasant while it happens but one or a couple of exposures do not have a big impact over your overall health. constant exposure (like once a week) would have a impact and would eventually negatively impact your overall health.

Chlorine kills by destroying the gills and chloramines kill by oxydizing the hemoglobin in the blood. Chloramine poisoning has the same symtoms as Nitrite poisoning (gasping, brown gills ...)
