Tapping on the class

my tank is next to a door that i always end up slamming if the window is open... baaaadddddd?

I would definitly avoid that. The loud sounds and tapping on the glass will stress fish a lot. In my community 29g, tapping the glass causes all the fish to scatter and hide. In my 60g cichlid tank, tapping the glass is associated with food.

the sound of tapping on the glass may not seem loud to you, but the sound reverberates as vibrations through the water, which can stress the fish. i'd never tap on the glass on my tank of skittish australian rainbows but do occasionally tap very lightly on my oscar's tank to get his attention in a hurry if i need to (like for checking on a scrape, etc).

I say no way..they don't hear like us at all.....have seen and kept tanks of fish near stereo systems for years...and the music was loud..very loud...no dead fish or rapid swimming...same for door slamming and what ever else happens with a crap load of kids in a house.

Well there is a bit of a difference between a sound that is created outside of the water and ones created in the water itself. I doubt the door slamming would do more then startle them (if that) and the loud stereo probably wouldn't bother them much at all (it's a constant sound, not a sudden rapid change). From a human perspective sound is much more muffled when it travels into water (granted fish don't hear the same way we do).

Tapping is definitely louder in water then out of water. But I seriously doubt you'll hurt the fish unless you hit the glass really hard (at which point damaging the tank would be more of a concern and it is quite possible that a pressure wave does the damage rather then sound itself).

errrmmm...the tapping is on the outside..if I read the thread correctly...unles you were tapping on the inside...lmao...

loud, deep sounds travel quite well and disturb water pretty good... even when delivered through air...

granted... that's on top of the speaker, there are examples of water moving all over youtube that aren't.

Well, yes. But if the aquarium is actually holding fish (if not then who cares what tapping on the glass does ) then there should be water up against the other side of the glass (which would make the sound inside the water column also). ;)

We used to tell our young nieces tapping the glass gave the fish headaches :hitting:mostly to keep sticky fingerprints off the glass but also to avoid startling the fish. Some fish seem more sensitive than others & none likes it if I accidentally drop the lid down. Some people use it to signal feeding time, once in a while I hold my finger to the glass for some ET interaction :joe:some fish are oblivious, some come over to check it out, some flee. I guess I don't mind MY fingerprints :o

Yes!! Sound really carries under water and across water, so you're probably giving them little fishy heart attacks, LOL
