Tatoo tinfoil barbs?

I've seen them advertised for sale online..

that's about it.

I saw some at a fish store and that is why I am asking.

Never seen them before.

I would say it's been painted...

i think more likely than painted, it is tattooed. they literally use a needle to inject ink under the skin of fish. check out www.deathbydyeing.org/home.htm.

it's a horrible practice (whether dipping, injecting, whatever) and should not be practiced or supported. i would say you should boycott that fish and not buy it. but that's just me.

i wouldnt buy them either. im pretty sure that the modern "tatooing" is done by a lazer... but there still may be facilities that use the needles. either way is very stressful, and the natural form of the tinfiol barb is really cool, so i dont know why somebody would dye fish, but then again, the wild forms of the glass fish and "natural" colors of the blood parrot are too, but people seem to still buy them for their bright colors :(

I've seen these barbs at one of my LFS in MA... they were pretty, but also pricey. I have to give respect to the employee there that I overhead disuading a customer from buying one. She explained in detail how the tat is done and how if no one buys them, the store won't carry them, etc...

Good for her! She probably won't be working there much longer, as her first priority is the fish, not the $$$.
