Even better....use double sided scotch tape. Put it on top of the glass for a while and they stop going near it. Once they stop, you can remove the tape. That's what I do.
well my two kitties aren't any different. When I had just the 30 gallon they could have cared less. But when I got the 55 AND 125 apparently that was the perfect size to pay attention to. While I was setting up the 125 tank my biggest cat (Gizmo 20lbs of fun) decided it would be an awsome idea for him to jump in the 125. Being a responsible mom I popped him and once I filled the tank with water it hasn't been an issue. They are interested in the tanks b/c the goldfish are slow and funny but other than that they don't try to get in the tank any more. I guess a good cold bath and a popping cured my kitties that and I have hoods on my tanks.
I don't know how helpful that would be I just that it was fun to share.

I read a thread once where a cat broke through the slats of a canopy over a reef tank. A bottle of food was emptied into the tank, nuked >$1000 (I don't remember the exact amount, but it was huge) of stock... other similar threads.
I am of the basic opinion that cats & aquariums don't mix - unless the aquarium is situated in such a way that the cat can't get on top of it, can't pull it over, can't knock it over, can't reach any of hte hoses or wires...pretty well can't get near it.
While I appreciate the humorous aspect of my post, I wasn't (entirely) kidding.
My sister keeps one of those toy guns that shoots foam balls next to the couch. When the cat starts getting close to the tank it will watch my brother in law. If it gets too close he will reach for it. It's kind of funny to watch. It's like a child that you tell no to and they watch you while they do it anyway. We hardly ever have to actually shoot at it any more. Usually once you put your hand on the gun she runs.
The bubble wrap idea is a good one. Once the cat's trained you can get rid of it. To be safe, you could put your cat in another room with the door closed when you have to do maintenance on the tank.
My wife has 2 cats that have never jumped on the tanks but they will sit and watch the fish and every once in a while will put their front paws up there like they are trying to swat the fish
Yeah, my cat does that too. It's funny, in my original tank, the fish have pretty much gotten used to her. They almost taunt her. They do play with her a good bit. However, in my second tank, the fish are a little newere. She still scares the $@#% out of them.
