Or you could just use some very course gravel/pebbles in place of the ordinary gravel behind the slate wall. That would prevent anaerobic spots from developing. If you went with live plants there, any stem plant or java fern would do fine. Rooted plants would need finer gravel, however. Plastic or silk plants are another option.

Thrift shops would be good places to look for legos. My mom got all my legos from garage sales & thrift shops. I didn't even know they came in those little kits. I just had a huge box of loose legos.

I used to put legos in my tank, but i just felt that it didnt have that "natural" look. But for the wall idea you could jsut put some big rocks under all the gravel and just cover them up with the gravel/sand so then you dont have to buy as much gravel/sand. Then the gravel/sand will still fill in all the cracks and still support the slate wall.

What about polystyrene (styrofoam in the US?) as a filler material? Its easily available, solid, easily formed into whatever shape you want, and its already used in background constrction.

can anyone confirm this? it seems too simple to be true!

also, the styrofoam idea sounds do-able. Where would i find a piece large enough? Would that green "florist's foam" stuff work?

IMHO & IME, coarse gravel is far worse than ordinary gravel as it cannot be vacuumed easily. The mulm will still sift down and over time build up a subtantial layer, and will go anoxic.
