terracing and gravel depth?

Very true....though that's the case with any gravel that isn't vacuumed. Mulm builds up over time. The idea behind the larger gravel is to allow the flow of water through and around the pebbles. The pebble size I'm talking about ranges from marble size and up. Avoid making the layer of pebbles/gravel too deep...4" or less, and if you can somehow provide water circulation through the gravel via a powerhead positioned to blow through the back of the wall structure, you shouldn't have any thing to worry about.

What if you burried an air stone/air line in the gravel? Would that help alleviate anerobic bacteria build-up? You could also directly siphon from that area during your weekly change.

This method would also favor the larger gravle.

sorry to all those that thought this post went to that great post place in the sky but i cant figure out how to link and someone wanted this info!
