Terrible, disgusting display of fish at large chain store.

The lfs that I support does keep bettas in cups. But they are decorative, and the store doesnt have half the room a big box/chain petstore has to keep the fish. Every time I am in there I look at the bettas and I see that there is very little to no food/waste in the bottom of their cups. They are also a bit bigger than the normal cups most stores use. And they are full to nearly the top with a little screen above to keep the fish from jumping out. There is an employee there that works very hard every day cleaning the betta cups and all of their other tanks. They dont sell anything under 5g there either. So they dont really offer keeping the fish in small cups, and they always ask people if this is their first experience with fish and what type of tank they will be put in, and if the tank is cycled or not.

It is sad to see fish living in these conditions. I know my dad wants me to get my fish from his big box store but they just arent fish I want. I want to get a job there and part of it being in charge of the fish tanks and stuff. But I dont think I could sell so many fish to people with an un cycled tank or one much too small. But the tanks do look very nice and are normally clean and well presented. i think he is lucky to have someone into fish keeping working for him.

That must be an awful death to experience. Living in old water filled with your own poop, with no food. Poor fish must of suffered before dying.

I have never seen betta fish in such bad conditions here before. Usually there are one or two dead but the water is always clean.

Hi. First time posting here. I was the original poster of this photo on reddit. I took some action based on the response I got. I contacted my county's spca and since the photo wasn't taken that day, there wasn't much they could do. I returned to the store that evening and sure enough, they had restocked since all the fish seen in the photo were dead. The new fish looked sick already, the water was much cleaner but still, about an inch and a half or two of water. I suspect they will be left like that again within a short time. Once that happens, ill be contacting the spca to report it. Unfortunately there isn't much they can do except complain so, if anyone witnesses this kinda stuff, please say something.

It really doesn't matter if it is a big box or not, pet driven or a sideline product. When you see deplorable conditions, report it thru any means you can.

one of my LFS's doesnt even sell bettas, the tothger keeps them in bowls that just teaches people its ok to have them in there. i saw a very small container that was divided into 3 so you can keep three bettas that can barely turn around. its really sad.
