TERRIFIED of getting actual fish....

I actually cycled my first tank with 5 zebra danios. Though it was a 72 gallon and I did water changes every 4 or 5 days, they all survived and are still with me today almost 2 years later. Plus they're readily available, fairly inexpensive, and rather attractive little fish. I ended up buying them friends and there are 9 or so of them now....I can never get them to hold still long enough to count them.

A nice option for a beginner, sturdy little fish. If you can find a small pet store to buy from I would recommend that over a wal-mart or a pet co, they just have healthier stock in my experience, even if you end up paying an extra quarter for the fish.

Guppies are a gamble, the fancy ones are sometimes so inbred that it can be worse. Little neon and cardinal tetras while pretty, are kind of delicate. My harlequin rasboras did nicely in my new tank setup as well. Those are very nice little fish. Very colorful when they settle in and grow up. Nice orange and black contrasts.

Good luck.

Like Katana said, guppies are really hit or miss. I've had ones that died after two days. I've had them live for years. They're bred en-masse, so bad genes can get passed around pretty easily.

Definitely look into platys. They're pretty and hella hardy. Go one male to every 2-3 females and you'll be golden (or get all one gender as they tend to breed). A lot of corydoras species are pretty hard to kill too.
