I bought four male dwarf powder blue gouramis and put them together in a 29g (w/ 3 large ghost shrimp, a large snail, and a baby pink kisser). The next morning, one was dead. I thought it was a sick one because he didn't run from the net at the fish store. So I took his body back and they gave me another. That night was fine, but the day after another was dead! I did not replace him. The three left seemed okay for a couple of days, but one night I was up very late and I looked at my tank and thought, is that a shadow covering him? No. The entire tail and 75% of his top and bottom fins from the back to the front were missing! He looked horrible. I just scooped him up in my hand (he wasn't very fast) and quarantined him. So he is alone and my tank is left with the pink kissing gourami and two of the original dwarf gouramis.
It's a small tank (I thought it huge when I bought it), and apparently male gouramis are distasteful of one another. The kisser follows the dwarfs around, but there seems to be no aggression between them. It's been one night since I found the chewed one alive, and this morning no one else was dead or had been attacked.
I'm going to see how it works out. If one kills the other... shoot. I'll learn the hard way and seek God's forgiveness for allowing my fish to harm on another. But I'll keep a close eye on them.
As for the seriously wounded guy, I'm going to quarantine and medicate him. I have no idea if his tail and fins will grow back, but he's still very much alive and I'm not ready for euthanatia yet.
Thanks.
