I've had my school of 12 neons happily in my cycled tank for about a week. Today I noticed that one (i think it is a female) seem to be hanging out in a small area between my driftwood and acting very territorial. When another neon would venture in, it would chase and seemingly nip at the intruder.

Has anyone ever had this weird behavior? Issit some breeding behavior or some disease?

i have one neon that at night always seems to hide down the bottom with all the plants but schools during the same i dont think its being teratorial though..
maybe it just like a bit of peice and quiete every now and then???

my does it start chasing the other neon should i get rid of it

Do they have enough cover to feel secure? Is the tank a good size for the number of fish you have? Are they tearing pieces off of the other fish?

If they are just "chasing", and everyones eating and swimming normally, I wouldnt worry about it. I know that danios do the chase thing, and keeping them in a proper sized school helps to keep that behavior within the species (apparently they dont mind so much if its one of their own? ).

How big a tank, and like TheZoo said so you have plently of cover for them?

My neons trade off in the chase and tag game, no violence with no real ‘dominate’ individuals. From what I have observed it is a natural part of their schooling behavior. The only time I would be concerned if fish where becoming injured or if these behaviors lead to one or more hiding, becoming lethargic or not eating.

so they just playing for fun there aint ripping

It is a planted 20G with just the 12 neons and some cherry shrimps. I'm not too worried now because they seem to not be harming eachother. Seems like just some "friendly" aggression. Can't really find any eggs though but it is pretty heavily planted and I can't see much. Hopefully it is all just some normal behavior.

my six scool morning and night and feeding time.then they break off into their own zones.two are territorial but the other four don`t seem to care.one sits dead centre by the log of th 25g and chases off other neons that come into his zone.
