these are on sale for 35 bucks at the pet co here, they're a whisper filter built into either a plastic coral or driftwood. how do these work? i'd be putting it into my eclipse system 12 (12 gallon) so i'm guessing i would stop using the filter and bio wheel that is meant for that? which is better?

i'm thinkin of going with this one to eliminate the noise, also theres a spot for the heater, so the filtered water will come out heated and probable be more evenly distributed.

anyone with personal experience?

I believe the filter included is an internal filter and I haven't heard too many positive things about them. If I were you, I'd stick with the bio-wheel.

Yea Bio Wheel Are Better

I have a Whisper internal filter. It works OK. It's ideal for bettas that don't like fast currents, and my dwarf puffers that are too tiny to swim against a lot of flow.

I'd agree that the filter and Bio-Wheel that's in the Eclipse hood is superior.

Those Water Wonder decorations take up a massive amount of space and if you went with the smaller 10 gallon/10i size to fit your tank you'd be underfiltered.

I run the Whisper internal 40i filters in my 20 gallon tanks and I've been pretty pleased with them. They are totally silent and easy to maintain. I probably wouldn't use them on planted tanks though as I could see the intake getting clogged. A lot of the negative reviews I've seen for the internal filters are folks who think that a filter is a substitute for water changes and end up getting angry when they have to change the water anyway.

if i do that, i won't have to keep the filter in the top part as well right? just let it flow over the bio wheel. be silly to pay for 2 filter medias.

also, is it a pain to change the filter media in the whisper? i'm assuming i'll have to dunk my hand in the tank to pull it out... yuck.

You won't need to dunk your hand in to change media - even though it's an "internal filter", it still stays above the surface of the water (it just doesn't hang off the back). You will only be able to fill the tank to the spout of the filter for it to work correctly as seen here:

The Water Wonders version is the same, just with the driftwood facade.
