tetras and angels

Red-whatever (minor, serpae, phantom...doesn't much matter which of the 2-3 species) and pretty well any deep bodied (phantom/serpae profile type) tetra owner should be wary of the potential for nipping. Nipping is generally reduced (or at least confined to school-mates) if these are kept in groups of at least 6.

Personally, I've gotten away w/ having a few Otos & Cardinals in w/ my (large enough to be laying) angel - so far, so good, but I won't be surprised if, someday, I have an issue as Otos & CTs will both, eventually, be small enough to be added to the menu. Having a pretty heavily planted tank w/ driftwood etc. helps.
 
I have never had issue with angels and cardinals or black neons(about the same size) regular neons tho have always managed to get eaten. as all of my otocinclus.
 
Black Neons get quite a bit larger & fatter than Cardinals, which get larger than regular Neons. Black Neons of any appreciable age are pretty well off teh menu.

Otos pose a particular problem because they occasionally deploy their pectoral spikes when an angel attempts to swollow them (go figure) - the problem is in the timing - the (relative to the oto) fast angel eats the oto, the slow angel spits the oto out, when the angel & oto are "evenly matched" the oto can get lodged in the angel's mouth with spikes deployed, usually resulting in the death of both fish.
 
i had my angels after being raised with all types of fish after they were mature they ate my glofish, neons, cherrybarbs, and killed 2 of my female bettas, so after a while nothing is safe with them..
 
Glofish & Cherry Barbs? Were they ambushed? Was the Ange l huge?

Those things are usually quick enough to avoid being eaten...
 
that is not surprising.. I have a few wild angels..they show the 'ambush' predator style quite well.
in my tanks with tall crypts they hide very well..at feedin time they will slowly glide into position..and.try to sneak up on the food.

David, if you read the posts again, none of us said tetras are not fine with angels. Some are, some aren't. I have given you the list with asterisks placed in some species so you can keep a close watch on those where risk is most possible.

this happened one night i stayed overnight elswhere and when i returned, 3barbs, 2 female bettas and 2 glofish and 4 neons were dead or missing, the angels were a pair and another single and they were about 3-4 inches not including fins. needless to say they were taken to lfs the next day, i miss them they were beautiful but i love my small fish..
