just a quick question. i want to set up a tank for my sister for her birthday. i'm thinking about getting her a 10g tank. she like neon tetras just wanted to know how many i can have in a 10g tank?

I would go with at least 7. Make sure you fishless cycle the tank prior to adding the neons because they are very fragile when it comes to poor water quality.

Ahem. Just to elaborate on taht last post, if you do not cycle the tank, like say her birthday was coming real soon, she will definitely end up with a tank full of dead fish... neon tetras are fragile, AND any other fish you put through a cycle will not live as long as it would have otherwise.

I find unless you are buying for someone who already is into the hobby, aquariums make terrible gifts for two reasons:

The work involved
The investment of time and money required

Just my opinion.

If you get a strong filter and once the tank ages, you could put about 15-20 in there if they will be the only fish. At first you could put in a small school then progressively add more.
