I recently purchased a 120 gallon tank. It came with a Tetratec pf500 and 300. Now i have not hooked the filters up. I was just wondering if anyone out there had any experiances with these HOB "Innovative" filters with heater core inside filter. I have one fairly large oscar 5-6" and 3 smaller 3-4" oscars. this tank will be their new home. Oscars are very messy fish and i was wondering if these filters will withstand the fish as they grow. The filters are rated 500gph and 300gph. Or should i just go with a sump and ditch the aquired filters? If so what size of a sump.

The tetra 500 w/heater is a nice filter my cousin has that one and has never had a problem. I would get a nice large canister a xp4 or fx5 both available way below retail on ebay thats where I always buy my canisters and use the tetra 500 along with it. I have a 2 emperor 400's and a fx5 on a 120 gallon goldfish tank and they water stays crystal clear and large goldfish are just massive poop machines.

The maintance on the fx5 is quite easy and I only need to do maintance about every 3 weeks generally and then its simple i just rinse the foam pads off and change the fiber floss i use and just give the other media a quick rinse and put it back together and its good to go. far as heater if your going to use the tetra 500 i would use the heater core for it since its made to house it and its out of the way. the tetra500 and the penguin 350 with bio wheels and a canister is how i would go myself. i dont heat my tanks since goldfish dont need tropical temps. i think you would be very happy with your tank and the water would be nice and clear. dont forget to check your local craigslist for tank items i have got some really good deals from local people on there. in this economy it sure helps to be able to save as much as you can. i always over filter all my tanks some people think its excessive but for me its my preference and it works for me and my fish are healthy. i traded a old old sump for a new penn plax cascade 1000 canister filter its pretty big and it is really a nice filter and does a great job and its maintance is very fast and easy they make several models i think the 1500 is the biggest. i dont hear much about cascade canisters but i havent had a problem and i would buy another if i needed it.

I have to agree the FX5 is a very good filter and if you don't want your heaters in the tank you could invest in a hydor inline heater.
As a 120g tank is only big enough for two oscars i would surgest having more than just the one filter on your tank.
