Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me get the CO2 going in my tank and share the results as they are today:

11/27: Took this BEFORE** I upped the wpg to 2 on 12/2. You can finally see the Amazon sword at the back peeking out over the driftwood.

** originally wrote this as being a week after I upped the wpg.

12/7: Ten days later with 2wpg and 3 days of intermittent DIY CO2. Amazon very visible.

12-17-05: Ten days after steady DIY CO2 injection. I thought watersprite was supposed to be a mid-ground plant? Looks like I need to do some pruning :)

Roan that tank looks fantastic. You are very artistic and a good aquascaper. I would like to ask you what the name of that red swordlike plant on the right hand side of your tank is? I would like to add some color to my planted tank. CO2 does make a difference I have a 2 wpg co2 injected tank and a 2 wpg non CO2 tank and I can definately see a difference in growth rates + algae. I have less algae in my CO2 injected tank than my non CO2 tank.

Lookin good, it's off to a nice start! I noticed the colours appear quite different in each picture.
Glad you noticed that 'cause I messed up. I installed the 2x20w Colormax bulbs on 12/2, which brought it to 2 wpg. So the first pic is *before* I added the lights.

I'll go edit my post and fix that.

The first picture was also taken in the dark. The other two pics -- were taken during the day; both have glare on the left side.

I absolutely hate my digital for indoor pictures. It's great for outside, but not inside. Shutter speed is TOO slow! I do have a roll of 800 asa I took with my Nikon, but I keep forgetting to get it developed :)

I did sharpen and tweak the colors slightly in the last one, because I didn't use my tripod and it was fuzzy. I hate the way the camera picks up the hightlights on the plants and washes them out. I like it FAR better and it looks more like the tank really does look in real life.

At least on my monitor it does.

I was surprised how much those crypts grew in such a short time.
So was I!

This is what I suspected was so bad with my photos.. the Digital camera, someyear i'll have to ugrade :) I did find a sneaky way for clearer pics with it though :)

Mine has a short movie feature and I got a 512mb card in it so I video the tank then when i'm watching the video I screencap my images. .. that way you get a shutter speed workaround without fish being blurry in movement :)

Why, thank you!
That's a submergent/emergent red rubin, Echinodorus rubin. It's supposed to be a background plant. I goofed on where I planted it :) S'kay, cause I'll be pulling these plants out over the next two weeks and putting them in other tanks. This tank will be housing Connor's goldfish, so I need tough icky tasting plants or plastic plants :)

I'm going to try that, thanks!

Icky tasting plants for goldfish? awwww.. and I bought mine some plants purposely so they would eat them :) sometimes they ask for a little italian dressing though and i have to say no.. but other then that it's ok.

But boy.. does their breath stink after they eat!

roan, what's your fertilizer regiment like, if you don't mind my asking?
I was throwing a capful of Kent Pro and a capful of Kent Freshwater Plant once a week or so. I kept forgetting.

My tap water has 2.0+ phosphates, .2 iron, 1.0 ammonia and 10 nitrates and I was changing the water twice a week or so anyhow, so I wasn't worried too much about fertilizers. Rainbows love fresh water :) I also use Flourite as my substrate.

However, as of Monday last week I started using Excel and Flourish as per the bottle instructions.

My last prechange test (12/16) showed that the levels for iron were still at .2, phosphates at 1.0, and nitrates at 7.0, so I'm going to keep up with the Flourish and Excel only and see what happens.

I have noticed what looks like some green hair algae forming over the PVC pipe and the rock directly beside it, and on the anacharis above it, so I'm being a more ridgid about how long the lights are on. I've a timer on order, just waiting for it to get here.
