Hey guys. Thanks a lot. I'm quitting on this website because people are calling me cruel. I'm trying to save money for bigger tanks.
Next time I need fish info, I'll go to a libary.

Some things people have said to me:

No offense - but it doesn't sound like this is a serious attempt at fishkeeping, guys.

They got more fish since because they hadn't done their research...

Are ALL those fish currently in a 5 gallon tank? That's just cruel.

Just so you guys know, I'M TRYING!!!

But I would like to thank AquaticAustin, livebearerfreak, and TL1000RSquid for giving me good advice and giving it to me gently.

While your free to do what you wish you wont find better information than you will from experienced hobbyists. People can be harsh at first but its because newbies often come along that either 1) dont listen to kindly spoken informatiob or 2) dont really care so they try to stress the importance. once you become more experienced youll see how small the tank is you have for all the fish you have and will understand why they want you to understand its bad

Caelyn- I am sorry that you had a negative experience with some posters on this forum. Sometimes the truth is neither gentle or nice. Unfortunately, that is one of the things that happens when you post to a public forum-- people can be not so gentle in the way that they talk to you. All of the things that you cited from posters are true. They may not be nice, and you certainly don't mean to be cruel to your fish, but the truth of the situation isn't really all that pretty.

As to your being, as you said, "a little girl," we have plenty of young members on this board, and many give and receive good advice and hopefully get valid and useful information about fish keeping. I really think that those people who explained your situation as "cruel," wanted to impress upon you the importance of fixing the situation as soon as possible, even if it means giving up the fish until you are able to care for them properly.

I wish you good luck with the situation. If you are able to develop a slightly thicker skin, most of the people around here are able and willing to help you with your fish situations, and many have years more practical experience than some books you might find. I congratulate you for seeking information and trying to do the right thing by your fish.

I was trying to describe to others why you had over-stocked your tank. Sorry if you took that the wrong way. What I said was completely true.

If you had stayed on the forum you could have helped your fish.

Bottom line, this is a child who has been reprimanded for doing something wrong. Nobody likes being told they are wrong. Children have a tendancy to throw tantrums and passive agressive guilt trips because they don't have the emotional maturity to take responsibility for their mistakes (not all, but alot). That's what is happening here. I read the other thread and saw one person say that keeping 2 goldfish, 2 mollies, and a bunch of molly fry in a 5 gallon aquarum was "cruel". Guess what? IT IS CRUEL!

Caelyn, do you go to the bathroom? Do you have any other animals like a dog, cat, guineapig, etc? Do they poop and pee? Do you have to clean up after them often, daily even? Guess what? Fish poop and pee too. But it doesn't just go on the ground, it goes into their water. The same water they are BREATHING. Fish waste is mostly ammonia. Pure ammonia is often used as a powerful cleaning agent, and it burns and feels uncomfortable in your nose if you smell it. It does the same to the fish's gills. It burns their gills and prevents them from getting enough oxygen. Not only that, but fish that are not full grown yet release a hormone into the water that keeps them from growing. The only way to remove this hormone from the water is to do lots of water changes and have a large enough aquarium. The smaller the aquarium, the more water you have to change, and the more often. That's why people think goldfish only live for a year, two at most. That's a lie. They live for up to 70 years, and the fancy fantail ones can get to be the size of a grapefruit if kept in good conditions. But when kept in a tiny bowl with maybe a water change once a week, they get stunted, and their internal organs rupture, and they die.

Now all that may sound mean to you, and I know you never intended to cause your fish harm, but what I said above is the truth. It's the real, gritty, non-candy-coated truth. If you can't take responsibility for what you've done, and then do everything in your power to make it right, then you shouldn't be keeping those fish. I'm sorry if what I've said hurts your feelings, but these are living creatures, and they depend on YOU to survive. They can't go get food for themselves, they can't clean up after themselves. They rely on you for everything, just like you rely on your parents.

* goldfish live for 20 years, not 70. Oldest on record was 43. I know it was a typo, but..

Honestly I do think people are being at least impatient, if not plain hard on her. We talk about the steep learning curve, often allude to the mistakes we made when first starting out. Then we give a little girl less than 48 hours to catch up and rectify the situation. I know that when I first realized how wrong my fish keeping was, it did not change immediately. As an adult with my own car and money, upgrades still didn't happen that day! I think people here are spoiled with kids like Nerdyrcdriver and ptrick125 (smart little boogers. hope my kid turns out so curious) and forget that children are.. Children. They don't start out responsible, we teach them that.

....that reminds me, I need a bigger tank - N

children dont like to be told there wrong in a negative way. when you do they get defensive and dont want to listen to anybody else. its not even really possible for her to upgrade in a day.

I'm so sorry people have offended you!! A lot of it does hurt, I know, but sometimes, it can really help in the end. I know that your not being cruel on purpose, but you are still causing your fish a great bit of harm, whether you did it on purpose or not. Chances are, you just don't know any better yet! Trust me, stick with it for a little while. A lot of the advice is good, and should be most certainly taken to heart, but comments like "Are ALL those fish currently in a 5 gallon tank? That's just cruel.", and "No offense - but it doesn't sound like this is a serious attempt at fishkeeping, guys.", are those truthfully helping anyone?!! And to all those who did post such offensive things, Do you think that putting a young person down, who seems relatively new to fish keeping, is really going to help them get better?!! To improve the quality of her tank?!! NO!! Obviously, your simply going to drive away someone who has come to you for advice and humbled themselves in doing so!! Do you not realize, that she didn't come here to be criticized, she merely wanted a little help?

TO EVERYONE, WHETHER YOU'VE OFFENDED OR NOT(yes, including myself):

"When I want to speak, let me think first:
-Is it true?
-Is it kind?
-Is it necessary?
If not, let it be left unsaid.
-Babcock

*NOBODY* likes to be told they are wrong in a negative way, and get defensive when they are. But some people are so oblivious because they don't know better that being nice about it just wont get the point across. Sometimes you have to be mean, and rude, and graphic about the consequences of their actions to burst their bubble.
