Substrate means the base of a tank, hence gravel or sand. YOU HAVE TO USE IT unless you tie the plants to something/

I think the tank looks great! Very balanced and colorful/interesting to look at!

Both my 20s are fake planted and I love the easy maintenance on them.

You can grow some plants under 15 watts ... I have a ton in my 20 long with 15 watts and they are doing healthy.
