The best filter to use is...?

That's an excellent filter...filters can be odd, most folks are very particular about what they like.
Very true. I like Eheim myself. But the one you got should work just fine for you.

I like hob filters because they are simple and easy to work on. I like the concept of canister filters, but they are expensive and harder to work on.

Aquaclear is my preferred brand for hobs but aqueon is good with a little modification.

I use marineland bio-wheel's but out of all filters... I believe that sumps are the best filters of all.

As long as you have the desired GPH and the filter keeps the water clear and clean your filter should be fine for your situation.

I have heard good things about the penguin (marineland) bio wheel filters as well. I havent tried one for myself yet tho.

Im partial to Rena Filstar XPs myself, but the filter you mentioned should do the job for you just fine.

I like my Aquaclear. It's pretty quiet and does a fine job (bought it when I had an issue and it cleared everything up quickly!). But, to be honest, I think most are pretty similar. The best is to find one you like and modify the media for optimal performance. Tetra and Aqueon use these "all-in-one" type bags. You can modify those to include some sort of bio-filter material and even add a sponge.

In short, modify whatever filter you have....the media that is!

What type of filter is the best to use? I just started my tank 2 months ago with a cheap-o filter from Walmart and the water is a little cloudy from the tannins in the Mopani Wood I just added, and yes I boiled it first :) so now it's only a little cloudy in the water. My question is: what type of filter is the best? I ordered the C-220 Marineland Multi-Stage 55 Gallon Canister filter which costed me over $100 on the web, $149.99 at my local Petsmart :silly: and the reviews I have read about it and other canister filters oo outstanding, so am I going the correct route?
A little late to ask if you already ordered a canister. I would steer you towards an Aquatop CF 400 or 500. Both of these canisters also have UV. When you get your filter run it with carbon to get rid of the tannins.
