Hey guys -

I just wanted to hear the best/hardest lessons that you guys have learned while keeping fish?

Not the best or the hardest but the most recent:

Look up information about a species before you take it home. I did not know that some killifish were born jumpers. I woke up to 4 pieces of fish jerky :(

What do you guys have?

discus in 72BF tank. don't introduce new fish w/o QT - so important espec. with discus & SW fish! QT & treat for at least 2-3wks.

I did not cuz I was too anxious & paid the price with 1. parasites & hunger strikes & 2. ich.
lost one discus (& that was lucky!)

Zig why were doing 60 in the snow?

Not putting covers on a betta tank and like OP found fish jerky that the cat was enjoying.

Seemed like a good idea at the time...

For me personnally...water parameters DO matter when doing water changes. Just because you treat the water with Prime first doesn't always make it immediately safe to use. pH shock is real and does happen. It doesn't have to be a perfect match, but the new water should be at least in the ball park before you add it.

Sticking dwarf gouramis in with a betta, I didn't know. The attacked a week after I put him in the tank and he suffered from ick and possibly fin rot. He survied but only lived a bout two months after his ordeal. He was my favorite betta too.

Impulsive fish buying &/or lack of quarantine. I always Q now but once in a great while I can't resist pretty fish that I don't really have a good place for or know enough about. Killies were my last auction madness a couple years ago.

One of the most disappointing lessons I've learned recently is to always have a back up plan. For example, I have been growing out some angelfish in a 55 gallon with intentions of adding a couple to my 90 which houses 2 BP's and a severum. I changed up the decor in the 90 before adding the angels. I knew they would be safe with the BP's. I did not know for sure about the severum but had read online that other people did it. It didn't work for me. Just because this scenario works for others, doesn't mean it will for you. Always have a back up plan! Like getting a new Fluval Osaka! (j/k)...
