Ok coldwater crowd.. What's the biggest goldfish? I know any koi will be bigger, but how big does the biggest species of goldfish grow? I had a few fantails out in the pond and they got massively huge before an owl cleaned them out.

Approx 210 gallon pond... I don't want to put a koi in there, just a goldfish or two, but I want em to be massive. Tell me what species to look at.

Second question. What's good owl proofing?

Goldfish are all the same species AFAIK. Fantails and Comets are probably the breeds that will get biggest the fastest and likely to be the least trouble...

As for the owl, maybe a few border collies guarding the pond? That's what I'm going to try :)

comets..these are fantails comets..the orange a white ones,I think they can get around 2ft.

LOL, so they are.
brain dead today.
I havent seen them for ages so i forgot, silly me.

The two single tails are sarasa comets and are the fastest growing fish i know of. They can get to 18 inches and the other 4 are fantails and some are crossed with shubunkin.
Shubunkins are fast growing fish too but maybe pushed to reach the same as the sarasa.

Now i need to go and see if i can find my fish lol.

i have a black moor that is about ten inches long, its been in my pond for about seven years, and doing great.

Slightly off topic.... but I'm from the Chicago, Illinois area and it can get quite cold in the winter.... we do have a heater that floats on the top of our pond all winter, but would a fantail survive this? All you guys that have had fantails in your pond for years, do they live through cold weather? I have two that I would love to move to my family's pond, but the rest of the fish out in it stay out there all winter.... any thoughts?

Yes the the comets, the red/white sarasa and shubunkin CAN get up to 24 inches but thats not the norm. Some Koi CAN get up to 36 inches, but that really isnt the norm either.

I read last week that you can expect comets, sarasa, shubunkin to get around 12" on average that's of course body length. If you have gotten one with a decent bloodline they might grow to 16-18", if you by chance are lucky and get one with a bloodline of "large" fish, just maybe you will get it to grow 20+ inches. It really is all about genetics - then quality of life - water, feed, care etc.

just get common, comet, or shubunkins and feed them a varied and balanced diet with a good amount of vegtable and animal protein. they'll grow good and big for you in no time ;)

i've heard overwintering them makes them have a growth spurt in the spring.
