The Biggest Goldfish

the black moor i mentioned earlier, has lived it an outside pond since the day i got it, and it shares that pond with several other fantails....and they've survived the winters here in southern missouri just fine.
and i've never used a heater in the pond.

southern missouri
there ya go.... it probably doesn't freeze solid there and the water temp probably doesn't drop much below 50. (remember, water is denser than air) probably the winter is shorter, too.

Ahhhhh, guess again about the weather here in southern missouri, two weeks ago it got down to 17 degrees! As for ponds freezing solid, I've only had experience with my two ponds. One froze nearly solid two years ago, the other had about four inch thick ice on the surface. I could believe I only lost two fish that year.
The problem with living in southern missouri is, you can get up to 4 inches of ice, yes ice not snow, over night with -20 wind chill and have weather in the seventies the next week.

I had a small pond maybe 100 gallons or so. I stocked it with feeder fish and boy did they get huge. They were very sweet they would eat the food out of my hand and let me pet them. As far as owl proofing what about netting, we had racoons.

Good luck

Yeah, netting or perhaps a yard cat? >.> My friend has a BIG tomcat named Nelix that requently scares off the owl behind their house out in the country. I guess he doesn't like sharing the mice!! ^__^;;

i have a black moor that is about ten inches long, its been in my pond for about seven years, and doing great.

Wow thats big for a fancy. Do you have any pics. I love Black Moors. Mine is sick right now.:mad:

no pictures right now, but i'll try to get some when I do spring cleaning in the pond.
do yours stay black? the reason I'm asking is my has slowly turned red/gold over the years. the only black left on it, is on the dorsil fin.
