The Biggest Goldfish

Are you sure it was an owl? I have not heard of them going for pond fish. Around here it is hawks, herons, raccoons, water snakes, and cats. Sunlight can help enhance certain pigments.

i've had several black moors, and they've all changed color, usually to the red gold color. i'm wondering if the color change is due to genetics. i know koi will change colors as they grow, i wonder if its the same with goldfish?

It's true. Most goldfish change colors a few times before they reach 2-3 years old, settle into their permanent colors, and then fade a little when they get into their golden years. Definitely genetic, very normal.

Black moors have a reputation for being a little difficult to keep black. I imagine the genes of "show-quality" fish will keep them blacker longer than your average pet store black moor. As with any fish.
