I am so appauled at the conditions that *chain store name removed* keeps thier fish. Everytime someone purchases a fish from there they are not "buying" it they are "saving" it. Most of the fish there have diseases or parasites and everytime I go into the store I want to buy everyfish because i know they will die if not bought. I was just wondering if anyone actually has an ok *chain store name removed* in their area. I am also wondering how long everyone quarentines thier fish from *chain store name removed*, I am thinking about saving a few Emerald Catfish to add to my school.

you aren't "saving" anything from box stores. They will just replace the one you buy with something else. I'm a saver too and as hard as it is to admit, it does no good to save anything from a chain petstore.

The best thing to do if you don't like a store is to not support it with making your purchases there. Go to the Mom and Pop LFS that could use the business and care for their fish properly and give them the business they need. If that's not possible then buy online.

Also, have you spoken to the management? That would probably be more useful than bringing it up on a internet forum.

Thanks for the quick replys, yea sounds understandable to not support them. It is just so sad :(, as for why I am bringing it up on the forum. I love to write haha.

You can't "save" a fish from a petstore because they just replace the merchandise they sold you with other merchandise. And yes, a fish is merchandise. Kinda like buying a puppy from a puppy mill, just perpetuates the problem.

Captaincaveman9, you bring up a most excellent point. I have read your post and eveything you said is true. I have previously talked to the staff and have seen no improvment this has been ongoing for a while....

ps: I do support my mom n pop LFS :)

I have bought all my fish from the 2 *chain store name removed* and 2 lfs (not a chain store) and I have never quarentined my fish. I did lose 2 fish within a week after purchase. 1 being a Golden Dojo from *chain store name removed* and a BGR from one of the LFS. But both deaths could have been my fault.

However I will say the when one of the *chain store name removed* built a new store in my area I was appauled when I saw almost ALL of their fish DEAD.

The next step I would do is contact the regional manager or email their corporate offices and explain the conditions and concerns. It does the company no good to have a bad reputation with the aquarium community. I have 2 big chain stores in my town, and they actually do a good job with their fish.

I don't really follow about removing the name. It's not like they're on this site or anything, and if they are, they should see this and do some serious reconsidering about treatment of their fish. I think if you feel strongly enough to complain about it on the forum, you should warn us about the store. I have had some bad experiences with this type of thing, including driving 1 1/2 hours to go to a new LFS to find 5 racks of sick guppies, mollies, and other run-of-the-mill fish for hideously expensive prices. I would have been happier if I would have known that it was bad. I think the name of the store was Something's Fishy or something. It's in Hampstead, MD. The guy was pretty nice, and maybe they were just cycling the tanks or something, but I was very unimpressed.

I commend you for wanting to rescue a fish, but it's not exactly like dog/child adoption. You're not actually helping that much, you're supporting it. The store will continue to import filthy fish from the Far East, sell them, and when they live a 'long life' of a week in the house (AKA the time it takes the 5 year old to forget about the goldifhs in their bowl), they'll come back for another one. And the cycle continues...
