Terminalia catappa is a species of a tropical tree that grows in Asia. It is believed that by placing Indian almond leaves in the aquarium it will improve the health of the fish, reduce the presence of fungus, improve the immune system, and help with skin problems. The leaves are rich with tannins and chemicals and have been used by Betta breeders in Thailand for many years. They are also being used for conditioning the betta's water for breeding and hardening of the scales. As the organic material of the leaf is decomposed by beneficial fungi and bacteria it also releases minerals. This is an ideal environment for infusoria which shrimp and fry enjoy eating. The leaves can also be used to lower the PH and reduce heavy metals in the water.

Does anyone have any experience with these? I'd like to put them in my 30 gallon angelfish tank. Make it look more Amazon-y. Hope to see your posts!

I use them in about a dozen tanks right now. They release alot of tannins (which I enjoy) and also the shrimp I keep like to graze on them. You can also use dried hardwood leaves (like oak).

I use oak leaves and they work nicely. They make an interesting substrate as well. I can't imagine why someone would pay for leaves. You can get all you want at my place in a couple of weeks. Bring your own rake and bags!

I do much prefer teh almond leaves to oak leaves though I use both. The almond leaves leech more tannins IME and they also stay put better. Oak leaves last longer and work very well though.
