I have been keeping neons a long time. I have also found one curiousity about them. They disappear. It never fails. I brought home a nice little school of 10 neons almost a month ago. I counted yesterday, (only took me 40 minutes, but thats not the point) and sure enough, im down to 9. So, where did that 10th neon go? Did it die? Did it spontaneously combust? Did aliens abduct it?

I check my tank each morning and do a quick headcount. I havent seen any dead fish, nothing unusual. Never do. But in all the years of keeping fish, neon tetras in particular, there is always 1 or 2 in a school that magically vanish. Anyone esle experience this phenomena? Just curious on your thoughts...

P.S. He didnt get eaten, nothing big enough to eat him in that tank.

I've lost up to 3 out of 10 neons for weeks. Then there are all 10 neons in the tank again.

Drove me batty. I'd crawl all around the tank trying to find every one of them.

I think they just take turns hiding. And they do it dang well.

Yeah my neons seem to disappear also. They seem very suceptible to disease when they are younger. After they are mature for a while they seem to live for a while.

My betta was making my neons disappear. He was such a good boy all day, but I guess he liked to snack through the night. He did this for 3 consecutive nights. Those neons were a little smaller than the others.

Counting neons should be considered an olimpyc sport. I just refuse to accept they magically dissapear, but they swim so fast and are so alike that counting is almost impossible. Also, they can hide even behind the smallest branch of a plant.

- Have you ever seen an elephant hiding behind a 5gl. betta tank?
- No, never had...
- Well, they hide pretty well, don't they. :joke:

A little :OT: but Boohoo and aquarob I love your avatars.

I've had 2 zebra danios, 2 plecos, a glass cat and a fairly large bamboo shrimp all disappear, never to be found. I suspect my ropefish had something to do with it.

I thought one of my smaller danios had died because I couldn't find him. i lifted the ornaments, looked in the plants, etc. He couldn't get in the intake tubes because they have sponges on them. I chalked it up as dead and eaten by the snails or goldfish. Next day he was back. Go figure...Never did ask him where he was.
