The Great Disappearing Neon...

If a fish dies naturally the other fish will eat it and bottom feaders will do it in a hurry. If a fish dies from disease the other fish generally dont mess with. It's like they know or something. At least that has been my experience.

My guess is that a Gourami would probably eat a neon durring the night.

I've also read or heard that some fish, when they know they are going to die will find someplace in the tank to hide and wait for the inevitable. If that happens their body may rot where it was hidden.

I've got 7 neons but only see six almost all the time. When I feed them magically there are 7 again. I suspect that one day soon the 7th won't show up for dinner though. Hope not that's for sure.

dang... double post.

yeah... i've got the same problem with my ghost shrimp. I haven't seen either of them for weeks. they're not dead, because if they were i'd smell it... try sniffing your tank. if you smell rotting fish, chances are you're got a dead neon in there.

I'm so glad someone else has had a disappearing fish. When I got my first tank I had a clown loach disappear. I asked everyone, and the consensus was he must be hiding or jumped out of the tank. I searched everywhere inside and outside the tank and never found the poor little guy. I finally accepted that he most likely died and my gold gourami ate him....I just don't know how that could happen w/o me seeing any of it!

My guppies disappear all the time. Which is normal considering that they are in a pred tank...except that the next day I do a head count and they are all there. I have no idea where they could be hiding, since the tank is completely bare, not even a substrate.
