As I understand it, aging itself can once in a while be one of the factors. I haven't studied any genetics in years though, so I'm not sure.
 
I didn't mean "old age", just the process of aging itself -i.e. baby to juvie to adult, etc. But again, I can't remember genetics much at all, so it's just a vague, half-memory that I'm going by. lol

It looks like there is shell damage along the line of change, but it is smooth and the "new" shell is thick and healthy.

I can't figure it either.

This one went from looking almost DSP to light magenta. I will get a better lighted pic when it wakes up, lol.

I have 2 blues that I bought at a local pet store that changed their shell coloring and thickness after I started feeding them snail jello.
