The Marimo Appreciation Thread

so they don't turn blue when you rub them ??????

i never understand the obsession over those things, just a bunch of moss/algae rolled into a ball, it doesnt look natural at all with a planted tank's hardscape...awkward.

The japanese are FANATIC over them as well, when i was in tokyo, they had marimo balls in everything! even keychains had tiny marimo balls sealed with some odd gel. You can also buy all sorts of glasswares with marimo balls in them, and i saw a few modified toto toilets with those green balls in the see through water tank....

It took me a long time to appreciate them as well. I agree that they don't look natural or fit into an aquascape very well. It's something else entirely. The way they float around in the currents, bounce up and down and just generally have a playful, happy thing going on.

Personally I think they look best in an empty aquarium with good current - they float all around in a surreal and ultra neato sort of way. Maybe something akin to a lava lamp...the appreciation of marimo balls is not the same as with planted tanks. Stillness is not the point.
