OK, I noticed my blue dwarf gourami getting a little fat last week. But, not so bad you could really tell it.Then yesterday I noticed his scales pokeing out.....wonderful...my favorite fish has dropsy. Now what?
According to all the research ive been doing last night and today.......it is most likey too late for him, but i refuse to give up just yet.
i purchased an antibiotic for him this morning,It was the only one my LFS had. But, i am not sure it is what i need to help him.
I have moved him to a hospital tank and was able to give him one dose of meds.He mostly hangs out at the bottom of the tank, but does come up for air and he also will eat just a little.Im thinking...that as long as i can keep him eating..he may possibly make it... i can hope..right?
But, here are my questions..............
What are the recommended meds for dropsy and do i have enough time to order them online?
Do I need to purchase a special food for this?
What about the tank he was in?
Should i do water changes in it an treat the fish in there also?
Will the antibiotics affect my snails and african frogs if i do need to treat my primary tank?
The meds i have say to feed straight to the fish like you would food..but what id my gourami refuses...which he is..can i mix it with fish food...which i did for the first dose.
I have read t hat the cause of dropsy is poor tank conditions or poor diet......my tank tests fine and i also do proper up keep....so what other foods can i feed my fish besides dried bloodworms and flack food?
What can i do to prevent the rest of my fish from getting this desease?

ok, i think that is all the questions i have for now...lol,, i had a bout a billion before i sat down to type, but now...not so many.

1.5 gallon hospital tank..suporting one very ill gourami

20 gallon
1 dwarf gourami...there were 2
7 neon tetra
2 fruit tetra
2 dwarf african frogs
1 bottom feeder
and about 15 tiny baby trumpet snails

10 gallon
1 male betta
2 dwarf african frogs
1 bottom feeder
and about 7-10 baby trumpet snails

The only Antibiotic that I have ever used before was Virbac Animal Health's Mardel line of products (specifically Maracyn-2).

I wish I could tell you more, but that is all I have used before, and I know it is something used for Dropsey.

Best of luck to your cool blue

thank guys, i will try the maracyn-2.I looked it up and your right, it is a cure for dropsy.lol i tried to search for a med ealier today, but w/o the acuall name of the med..i was having no luck.
so far...my gourami has been hanging at the bottom, then he will swim around the tank for a few and pick at the bottom for some food.He has no color fading and is very sparkly looking..im guessing because the protruding scales are reflecting light.
after making a round in the hospital tank, he will get a gulp of air and then go back to his corner and sit.
so, maybe, just maybe there is hope for him.
gonna have to go grab the med asap in the morning though.

update on my dropsy gourami

Well, Gobbles is still kicking and still pretty active...for a sick fish.Ive noticed there is a small area or patch that is smooth where some of his scales have fallin off..im not sure if that is from the desease or from him flashing or rubbing and knocking them off.
I have been giving him the antibiotic while i wait for the maracyn I&II to come in the mail.
He is still eating like a horse and gobbles or pecks at the bottom of the tank for a while, then goes back to his corner to sit and rest.He also takes a few swims around the small tank for about 10-15 minutes before going back to his corner as well.
His poop isnt stringy or anything either.
Could all of this mean that his case may not be very severe?
lo, wishful thinking here...im just pretty attatched to gobbles
