The Other Freshwater Puffers

The lurkers (ones the bury themselves) are really aggressive and couldn't go in a community tank. But people have had good success with keeping red eye (irrubescos) in community tanks.

You could get a 500 gallon tank and get a MBU, they are amazing puffers :)

Hmm..maybe just the red eye. I love how on the puffer forum they say "Some are timid and others will kill everything in sight".

I'm only looking to get the ones that confirmed 100% freshwater, at least until I get some experience with BW and SW.

Carinotetraodon irrubesco is an excellent puffer. They have red tail and red eye, unlike the similar looking lortieri (spelling is off). They only grow to about 2 inches, and mine is in my community (as you can see in sig). Definitely the most peaceful puffer I've ever had, they buzz around slowly and like hiding among plants. Eats bloodworms, brine, and the occasional live treats... and he wont even bother ghost shrimp since they are a decent size in my tank. So if you want a pretty, peaceful puffer this is your guy. The bad part is they are so hard to find. Good luck.

T irribusco are a bit "friendlier" than T lorteti, as far as puffers go but I wouldn't be surprised if one day you'd find parts missing on your other fish.

I have kept T. lorteti, T irribusco, A modestus, T miurus, T suvattii, T turgidus, T fahaka, SAPs & DPs. All are best kept in species only tanks, although DPs & SAPs can be kept with conspecifics (DPs, 1m/3F) & the smaller red eye species can be kept in pairs, if there is enough space & broken lines of sight for all. Every other species of
FW puffer should be kept as a singleton.

I love the description on the puffer forum about their temperment. We are considering turning a 55 into a puffer and ADF tank(four irribesco puffers), with lots and lots of backup quarantine tanks. That's later, though.

Well like with most marine life, and any organisms on the planet is, the tempermant between different individuals is huge. It has been over 6 months and he hasn't touched a fish in my tank, they swim by him all the time...nobody has ripped fins, no problems. But this may just be my guys temperment. Secondly, if you dont want problems it is best to keep them from ever getting hungry. I feed my tank religiously daily, and I always watch him get his share of worms until his belly is rounded. I wouldn't try to find out what happens if he gets hungry however, then we may have problems!

I have a target puffer (T turgidus) and he does pretty much nothing but hide in his fake log or in the back corner of the tank, but he's as cute as can be and I love him even though he's pretty boring lol. I kept a couple of bolivian rams in with him for a long time and he never bothered them. For the past few months he has shared his home with some guppies but I do think he's been snacking on a few as there seems to be less in there than I remember. If you don't mind a fish that does pretty much nothing, this is a great puffer to own :)

Yeah... they are pretty cute!
