The Oto Journal

hurray!

While visiting a good breeder friend recently, I realized he uses a long chopstick to move leaves around to look for eggs. Sure worked great!

I usually use the bamboo skewers that I use for zucchini myself. Does work very well.

Update 08-Dec-2012

Check of the tanks today and discovered a mini spawn in the main breeder. I didn't look thoroughly but managed to count (8) viable eggs and (1) non viable one. It was actually the non viable egg that caught my attention as it is a white ball sitting on the substrate.

This comes on the heels of a major rescape of that particular tank. Its part of my de-duckweed and de-snailification process. I completely removed every plant and ensured they were snail free, scraped the glass and removed the moss wall. I hadn't put the moss wall back in as yet and is on the schedule for today.

So today will be a water change, CO2 change and placing the Subwassertang wall back in preparation of the hatching.

Update 09-Dec-2012

And hatching has begun. Found (3) wigglers so far. Several more eggs left to hatch. This will be a bit of a challenge to keep since the scrubbing of the tank. Have the food prepped and ready. Need to get past the 48hr mark.

Update 11-Dec-2012

Spotted (10) wigglers yesterday. Started introducing prepared foods for them. Tank isn't a very thick jungle as yet so used a dosing dropper to target spot where I placed the powder.

I have just read this thread from beginning to end. I think its absolutely incredible what you have done. I've always been a fan of my oto ever since we got him over a year ago. I've been thinking about doing a low tech tank, and figure that oto's would LOVE something like that.

Also, you've mentioned a few times that you have duck weed problems. I was looking into Walstad aquariums on youtube and there was a guy that was talking about plants eliminating other plants naturally by allelopathy. The one that he was talking about to get rid of duck weed was vallisneria something or other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vow13k2nD48&feature=g-user-c is the link for the info if you're interested. Its actually kinda neat.

Anyhow, look forward to reading more about your oto's and the other thread you started about your others species. :)

Thanks.

Duckweed isn't much of an issue now due to my manual removal. Tanks are soooo much better now. Great vid reference I must say.

Everyone likes pictures of fry guys right? Wee ones are starting to venture around the tank more.

Why thank you! :) The whole series is actually pretty cool. You think the oto's would like something like that given that they had hiding spots and the right plants? I wanted to build a Walstad tank, and after reading your thread I figured oto's might be the most fun to try out.

Update 16-Dec-2012

Found (10) wiggle waggles this morning. All still doing fine and coloring up nicely. Very active bunch. Really working the tank over good.
