The Oto Journal

10/03: Going to be at the state fair today so nothing will be done on the tanks. There was a scheduled water change for tomorrow but may have to postpone due anticipated hatchings. I may just try to do a trickle from the HOB.

Morning check and all seems well. Papa went completely bizzerk when the light came. He eventually calmed down. So much activity this morn. Found that papa missed three eggs. All others look good.

Prepping a couple of zucs to feed today as I type.

Here's a few shots to get through the day:

Home as it sits right now. Rebuild still in progress. Suesswassertang will cover the grid in the back left. Will add some more foreground to the left. Looking to get some Ludwigia Ovalis to add to other Ludwigs. Will need to find a good plant I can add behind the crypt jungle. This is where the HOB is so I can't do anything that is going to get big.

If you look close enough on the front glass towards the middle, you will find some wigglers. You can also see one of the non viable eggs on the center plant (blade at the far right)

Here's a couple shots of a few of the juvies:

Not a good pic. White background under the light...couldn't get good focus. But...everyone loves a good cuttlebone.

And of course...here's Boris. Can't forget him. Natasha still not acting right. She still sits in the same spot but I do she her peeking out of her shell from time to time.

10/04: Hatching began a little earlier than I thought. Figured I had until late this afternoon. Minor snag in the water change, but will still do a trickle from the HOB to do it.

Found some eggs turned fuzzy. Water quality still an issue. Have to try to come up with a safe schedule to get it back. Think also where they were laid has poor circulation. May look at adjusting the HOB a little more center to try and get coverage.

Still a few more eggs left to hatch. Here's some shots from today: Wigglers not the easiest thing to snap (for me that is).

Had more eggs than I originally found on the Lobelia. You can see the ball of fuzz in the upper center. Four eggs are in there. Few wigglers (one to the left and one to the right) and a couple on the under sides of the leaves.

Bonus shot: Couldn't resist the poser:

Parting shots from today (10/04):

Size comparison. Ever wonder how small a baby Oto actually is? Here's Boris. In the upper right is a one week old baby. In the lower right is one that just hatched this morning.

They learn quick that zucchini is yummy:

i'm sorry, i just gotta ask. is the baby the one spot that doesn't quite look like a water spot. i'm afraid i may be missing something.

i have been following this thread for a while now and didn't want to clutter it up. now that i have a question i would also like to say good job. that's not an easy task from what i hear.

Ok..just point out the water spots on the tank. ;o)

Yes....the new baby is the one that doesn't look like a water spot.

the shape and the vertical blur (tail) below it gave it away. i still wasn't 100% sure. and sorry, didn't quite know how else to say it.

thanks for the circle. :duh:

np...they are so small it can be a bit hard to pick them up at times.
