Depends on whether you go to a locally owned place or a chain here. You can get a platy (some of them) or a danio for .99 at the chains. Locally owned place sells danios for around 1.50, and I paid 3.00 each for a pair of platies. I paid that much because the chain tanks had a lot of ick and you couldn't even sex a lot of the platies because they never extended their fins. You pay for what you get basically around here. Others are closer in price. Dwarf gouramis are virtually the same price everywhere (around 6).
