Many members here have an abundance of MTS and would be happy to send you some at little or no cost. Just try posting a WTB ad on this forum.
Plants will take up nutrients from whatever source they can. BUT, since you have sand for substrate, I would def add root tabs every 3 months, and dose the water column using pps pro method daily. Fish boss was also correct about dosing Seachem Excel, but it's not a fert, it's liquid carbon, dosing it daily is a good idea also.
