So, I was reading something that said that the true severum is Heros severus, but the kind found most commonly in stores is actually Heros efasciatus. Does this matter? Are they close enough that anything I find on the internet about severus will apply to efasciatus? or are people (all the ones making the webpages) just calling all their severums Heros severus even though they are actually Heros efasciatus? Is the only difference between the species that one is a mouthbrooder and one is an open spawner?

Not sure, but I have a pair of gold severums, always assumed they were Heros severus. They're definitely not mouth brooders, they laid eggs on a flat rock when they spawned, and guarded them like crazy.

There's not too much difference between the two, other than what you stated. H. efasciatus is a substrate spawner and severus is a mouthbrooder.

Gold severums are H. efasciatus.

Hey, good to know, thanks.

General info will suffice....breeding/spawning different
