The useless junk they try to sell you

One of the best places to find madtoms is in discarded beverage cans and bottles.:grinyes: Little buggers have no taste.

I'm with you Chia! Back in the days when I though the people who worked at my LFS (Petsmart) knew what they were doing, I bought at least half of the stuff listed which promptly led to an unhappy ending. This is a great thread though!

Common Plecs sold as algae cleaners.

"Since your getting all these fish I'd recomend buying a pleco to help clean your tank! You will have to do only 1 water change a month that way!"

Also trying to convince me to replace filters once a month. Pttch.

I've attached an image. The foreground plant is Peacock Fern mistakenly purchased from Petsmart; they kindly took it back. The red stalks at the back are, I think, a Cherry Hedge, purchased from a locally owned petshop and sold to me as an aquatic plant. I'm a newbie and my 29 Gallon tank has only plants and I'm cycling-up with household ammonia.

the actual people in the stores themselves
i just went to my lfs and asked the lady to get me a fire mouth cichlid and she asked me which one they were

:welcome: to AC!

Please repost the pic here.:) The topic below is really important so we can reduce the number of incidents where people waste their cash on false aquatic plants believing these are fine when submerged.

i almost got into a fight with a lady who couldn't tell a male guppy from a female guppy. it's not like i asked her to randomly pick out three males, i just told her i *wanted* three male guppies, i started showing her which ones to get, and she was like, i think that one's a girl. i tried to show her how the tail fin was bigger and the body was thin, but she kept talking about it. finally i just said - okay, fine, i don't care if it's a boy or a girl, just net THAT one. i should have just said it was a female, i think they're cheaper. . . .
