The useless junk they try to sell you

What is wrong with the airline holders. Some people have a specific route they want their airline to take and the only way they can get it to stay there is with items such as these. Personally, I think several big ugly suction cups on the side of my tank looks worse than a stray airline but that's just me.

Are you saying that this brand of algae killer does not work. I don't sell jungle products so I don't have first hand knowledge with this one but I have been told it works well. As far as not using chemicals to kill the algae, I agree, natural methods are better in the long run, but what most of you don't seem to understand is that there is a large part of the hobby that does not want to go through these steps. They are lazy and they want to take the easy way out. You people are not, that is why you are here. I can talk till I'm blue in the face about reducing the amount they feed, cutting back on the light, doing water changes etc. etc. and some people still say "Yeah but I just want something that will kill the algae now" Products like these do work. They may not be the preferred method of the aquarium gods and goddesses but not everyone is an aquarium god or goddess and not everyone wants to be.

When you think about it, there are a lot of products that are "not needed" but people purchase because we want them. How many different styles and colors do dog collars come in? What about designer cat carriers?

Yes they may work but what else do they kill as well as algae.

Exactly, and does that make them junk? I don't think so.

I don't know. Do you? You are insinuating that they kill other things but do you have any first hand knowledge of this? If you can point me to any scientific studies that would indicate that these products also kill other things (and I'm talking fish as most of them will tell you not to use it with live plants or inverts or what have you) I have yet to have any of my customers come back to me and tell me that they lost any fish by using the product I sell and I myself have tested it on aquariums with fish and as far as I can tell its safe. And it does kill the algae. For the record I sell Algae Fix by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals. I don't think it works as fast as the algae destroyers but I also think it is safer to work with.

the fact that it kills plants and inverts is reason enough to stay away from it completely. Say you use that in your tank, later you want inverts, say goodbye to inverts for good in that tank, almost no gettin rid of the stuff. bad idea to go fight algae with chemicals. I'm sure it isn't entirely safe on fish either.

what about flourish excel??
it is commonly recommended to help combat algae in tanks.
do we know what mechanism is killing the algae? it is known to also melt anacharis and crypts

I personally don't think Flourish Excel falls into the "useless junk" category. At regular doses I've had no issues with my crytps or vals, and it has cleared up my BBA problem. The fish and inverts are fine and thriving.

Also, the manufacturer doesn't claim it kills algae. They sell it as a plant fert.

I have had the opposite experience with Flourish, killing all my Vals but the Giants. It was 2 weeks and several water changes before I could grow anacharis again. I used a bit less than the recommended amount for the first dose. Perhaps skipping the initial large dose would work, but I won't use it again in that tank.
I have used algae products to clear up green water, and to help combat BBA. It is not a solution, but after getting a good balance between ferts, lighting, and fast growing plants, it was useful for killing the last stragglers, which are nearly impossible to kill short of removing all of the plants and dipping them in peroxide or Prime. No fish were harmed in the process. I have not used the stuff in the pic however.
Tank Buddies makes effective fungus and ich treatments, both of which I've used with success. I agree it's a dumb name, but their products do work.

The way Lee's make their airline holders is silly and can easily unattach, imo...other airline others are a lot better.

perhaps they made a better design until now?

And about the algae killer, what the others said.
