Thermometer or heater is incorrect

I have a Jager 200W heater in my tank which I just got. I have the heater set for 76 degrees. Yet my digital thermometer )which has a separate sensor that goes under water) says the tank is 81 degrees. How do I know which one is correct? All I have is a meat thermometer as a substitute, but that does not begin reading value until 100 degrees. What to do?

I expect the water is either being heated from outside sources, the lighting or the heater is printed wrongly. Fine-tuning is quite hard on them sometimes. Check to see if the sensor works in another tank or in something you know the temp of.

Personally I've never had a heater that made the water what the heater said it was. I've always ignored what the heater says and I just turn the knob until my thermometer is at the temp I want.

Yes I agree about getting a cheap thermometer, I have a jager and it is pretty much right on it could still be adjusting have you had it running for at least 24 hours?

**** you got a thermometer that you use under your tougne when you are sick? to check for fever? Bleach one of those and check your water temp in that, drop it in the tank for about two minutes and that will be acurate.

I also agree. My visi-therm has numbers on it but they give you a "rough" idea of the temp. Stick with the thermometer reading.

As others have said, adjust the heater down so that it keeps the tank temperature where you want it. It's fairly common for heaters not to match up exactly to the temperature you set on the knob.

The Jager has a button inside it where you can regulate what it says to what it is, check your instructions it has a proper name that I should be using but I forget..

I will chime in here and echo what others have said- I've never had a heater that was accurate. Go by the thermometer.
