thermometer questions

andy... i translate those claims slightly different. i believe within one degree, etc. refers to what you can expect your temp swing to be, not one degree from what the dial says but one degree in general. the same can be said for any temp setting device be it for a whole house, reptile cage or aquarium heater. i mean when i set my house temp to 70* it's because i enjoy my house being between 65* and 68* and i have come to know that setting it at 70* will consistently give me those temps (within 2 degrees of course).

also within one degree means in either direction... so it's one up or one down... which means a total of 2 for a swing...

Very interesting. The very fact that these accuracy claims can be interpreted in differnet ways tell me that the mfgr. needs to spell this out much more clearly in the intructions. It can be misleading.

that, i'll have to completely agree with. a better description lends itself to more credibility... especially once you consider how things can be interpreted.

I've always known this to be the case. Who cares what the dial says as long as I have a thermometer to verify. Heck, my Aqua Heat is under my stand and I can't even see the dial or lights. But I have two thermometers to verify in the tank. One of them a Tom Aquarium Alert which is great. Monitors the temp to stay between 75-82 degrees and beeps if it goes outside that setting.

I am inclined to agree with dundadundun

I never rely on the setting on the heater.. i only use it as a guide and adjust the heater setting using the reading on the thermometer.

I also agree with using a floating or internal thermometer

If that's the case, maybe the heaters should eliminate the temp scale and just tell you to do it the way the old heaters worked. Turn the dial 'til the pilot lamp came on, monitor your temp, turn the dial a little more, monitor your temp, turn your dial a little more, monitor your temp........ It worked back then!

ok, I've ordered the fusion from Kensfish.com, and the digital from Dr'sfosterandSmith. I have neons, and snails in one tank, and hatchets and rainbows and shrimp in the other tank. What is my ideal temp range for each tank. Thanks again, linda

snail and shrimp species might help to get you better answers for temps. a thread dedicated to that question in the general freshwater section might get you more replies faster.

I usually do this anyway. I'm kinda paranoid and don't trust that every new thing I have will work, though. But, I can say that I only have 1 heater that has any temp range on it. The rest just have lines for reference to know how far you've turned it up or down, but there are no temps printed on it.
