Thermometer woes..

The tank is beside a window that sucks, so if anywhere the tank should be somewhere nicer. It's definately not other factors. I'll try and dig up a window one somewhere.

Sunlight hitting the tank will raise the temp significantly, I think that answers the question right there.

Nope. Blinds block any light coming in, and there's a large building blocking most of the light to begin with. The tank sits lower than the window also, making it impossible!

edit: the thermometer came stuck to the outside of the glass, so i just assumed it was supposed to be there. As someone mentioned above they suck because they just measure the temp of the glass.

do you have your sick on one inside the tank, aqua..?

I have thermometers stuck on the inside of all my tanks and digital ones on the outside.

The digitals seem to be fairly accurate -- within 1 or 2 degrees of the heater -- and they're not expensive. They're also easier to read. I used these on all my reptile cages and when I started into aquaria and found out they were also tank safe, I started using them in my tanks as well.

The only draw back is that the probe that goes into the water from the readout can only be dropped into the water at the front, or run around to the back and into the water. Both ways look kinda messy, but it's not that noticeable.

They're made for Coralife and ESU -- a reptile company which is probably owned by Coralife. They run on a "hearing aid" battery and can be programmed for Celcius.

i used to use those cheap sticker thermometers andi actually had one that read room temp instead of tank temp so i now only usethe floating type much more accurate.

thanks for the link roan. there's a big als at the other end of town here ill check out eventually.

and nobody knows if sticker therms can be put IN the water?!

CB - the sticker types are meant to be placed on the outside of the glass, not in the water. It wouldn't hurt to get another type if it concerns you, but I've always found mine to be fairly accurate.
