Thermometers question

Hi,
For all my tanks I have been using those types that stick to the front of your glass to show what temperature the tank is. I want to find out if you all know if those are proven to be accurate or not? I am trying to get my temperature up and my heater says 86 deg. but the stick on temperature thing says its only 80 degrees. Does anyone else use these stick on things?

I used to use those, but IMO they aren't as acurate and they don't last very long. I use the ones that either float in the tank or have the suction cup with it to keep it stuck to the side. I would def recommend that you throw those sticky ones away and get the ones that go inside the tank...they've worked great for me :dance
 
Did you have the heater in the tank for 15-30 minutes before plugging it in?

IMO, the stick on type are not as reliable. I have digital thermometers that I use to check my tanks, and the one stick on I have (used tank, so don't know how old it is), is always off by 2-3 degrees. But, the age of that one may contribute, too.
 
i usualy use an internal glass thermometer i think its better be in the water than the glass,,especially if u have an a/c or a heater blowing air to that side
 
I have the liquid crystal external stick-on types on most of my tanks, but I am not impressed with their accuracy. As with many tank tests, they give rough approximations which are perfectly fine for my use. If the tank has gotten much warmer or cooler, I'll notice and check with a an electronic digital thermometer.
 
Thanks everyone. I went ahead and ran to the lfs and bought me one of those thermometers that hang in the water and they have the suction cup to attach it to the glass if you want. It turns out that it WAS 86 degrees just like the heater said... so my sticky on the outside of the tank was way off.

I use the sticky type on all my tanks. I use to have those floating type but my RD shattered it so went with the sticky type there off by 2 or 3 degrees I have a digital one that I use if something is up or down with the temps but the sticky work as an early warning. The stickys I'm using range from 12 to 5 yrs so for me they last a long time
