They're all gonna die....

I guess it depends on lighting versus the dosage.

I have vals doing fine in under 1 wpg and dosing flourish excel a little but they are growing great.

But if you have too much light and too light nutrients (or vice versa) that is your problem...

My lighting is just 2 CF fixtures with 96watt 6700K ultra daylight bulbs, judging by the algae growth, I think the lighting is pretty good.
I have only dosed ferts once, I used Flourish comprehensive, I thought the Iron in excel was bad, so I cot the comprehensive.

My water is amix of about 60/40 RO-Di to striaght out of the softener (tap water) maybe I removed too much of the necessary nutrients?

If I shouldnt use this flourish, then what ferts should I use?

also I've read many places that vals were good in duscus tanks because they could tolerate the warmer temps, and lower lighting.

So far my swords look ok, they have a little brown on them, but I think it might have been there, but the vals look terrible.

I'm pretty sure they can tolerate warmer temps, so i don't think thats it.

As far as dosing ferts, the Flourish Comprehensive should be ok, Iron can only be a good thing in plants as well. Even in nitrate lacking enviroments, my vals went nuts. If you do dose ferts, make sure you have enough nitrates and potassium, Rex Grigg can get you good deal on plant ferts.

But wait and see if they don't come back from the roots. If not, I can send you some of mine, Mine are deciding to split. within 2 weeks I now two new plants.

I would love more, but dont want to add any until I understand what is wrong with these...

I ordered soem CO2 eqipment, (just a diffuser, as I already have the regulator and such for my keggerator...

now think about this, I am sacrificing my BEER for some friggin aquarium plants?!?! What is happening to me???? AHHHHHH!!!!!:eek:

Excel is not an Iron source, it's a carbon source. Flourish has a separate source for Iron, known as Flourish Iron. ;) Iron is not a bad additive, it helps the red plants stay red, and helps thicker leaves stay thick.

And yes, excel will melt vals.. been there, done that.

Does the regular "Flourish" not have iron in it? I was under the impression that it did.

Flourish comprehensive is only .32% iron. Excel does not contain any iron (carbon like J2R said) but does help plants use up iron...if you need more iron in your water I wouldnt count on regular flourish to give you the needed dose
