Things you should have known, but just learned

1. That fish store employees knowledge base is inversely proportional to their confidence in the information and advice they give.

2. Never listen to fish store employees, or at least confine your questions to:
- How many fish have died in this lot? How long have they been here?
- Are they eating well?
- Can you test the water parameters in your tank for me please? Could I take a look at that strip?
- Are all of these tanks on the same system?

Never test a 2000gph pump in a bucket with 8" of water....all that water will end up on the ceiling.

I guess this isn't something I just learned but when I finally did 'get it' it made a huge difference in my fish keeping...

Understanding pH, what it means and how it impacts the fish's environment.

Leaving an open bottle of Prime next to the stove, drinking a really nice bottle of Chianti, and cooking is ill advised........really, really, ill advised!

Not to forget to turn the water heater OFF, before doing a water change...sad to admit, but I've done that twice over the years, both cracked.....now I have a submersible!

Banjo catfish are very good at playing dead. They like to remind you of this right as they decide to swim down the drain of your toilet.

Something I shoulda known but just learned......

That DIY CO2 is not as easy as it sounds no matter how simple it sounds! :mad2::wall:

At least for me that is. :)

Your reaction time is never as fast as you think it is. So never suck water through a hose to try to empty your fish tank. You'll end up sucking up a lot of water or if your luck one of your smaller fish that happened to find the tube interesting will swim right into your mouth.:eek3::silly::silly::silly:

If you're sucking on a tube to start a siphon and you think the tube is clogged, don't keep sucking...you might just end up with a mouthful of pond gunk. blech.
