I am thinking about changing my tank from a community tank to a cichlid tank. The tank is a 58 gallon show tank. I was wondering, if I take all of my fish out (and give them to a friend who has room for them), and clean the tank, being careful not to kill off my bacteria, will it be ok for some cichlids?

you'll need to watch the pH/hardness values and be sure the cichlids you put in there will be ok with the pH, hardness that's already established.
of course, i went through the whole process as u would just a month ago. not only i switch fish, but I changed everything in the tank, except the water and filter.

i did it in a night, took me 2 hours to get the old stuff out, and another hour to put new stuff in, then let it sit for couple of hours before i put my fish back in the tank. when u got ur fish out, put them in a bucket, just make sure put an air stone and heater in it also.
